Works For Me Wednesday

Remembering Those Special Days

Wanna know how to get your husband to remember your birthday, anniversary, Valentine’s Day, or other special occasion? I have a novel idea for you, that has worked well for me these past 7 years. Tell him! My husband is horrible with calendars. His mind just simply doesn’t work that way. Quiz him on the date of my birthday and, given some time to think, he will probably get it. Ask him how far away that is and he will have no clue (He would need time to figure out which month we were in first).

Thanks Mr Turtle

When my oldest daughter was born my son wanted to get her this musical turtle he saw at Target for her crib. Every time we went to Target he would push the buttons to make it play music and he would ask if he could get it for his sister. We didn’t think it was necessary. He was still insistent about it when our third child was born so we decided to let him get it for his sister for Christmas.

How far did I go?

I mentioned here, that I started running this summer. I am following a training schedule to help me reach my goal but it keeps changing the distance that I must run each day. Instead of guestimating (surely it’s been a mile by now) or driving the route with the car (like I really feel like loading the kids another time) to try to calculate the distance, my wonderful husband, the engineer, found me an online application made using google maps that is a HUGE help!

A No Thank You Bite

[] (https://latc.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/w4mewed1.jpg) "Ew, gross!" "I don’t like it!" How many of you have had this response after working hard to prepare a new dish for you family? It can be quite frustrating especially if you know they’ll like it b/c they like every single one of the ingredients in it or worse yet, they devoured it the last time you made it and now won’t even try it. My husband and I have always insisted the our kids at least try a bite of whatever it is we’re eating.

Are we there yet?

Traveling for 5 hours in a minivan with 3 young children and one dog sounds like a kicking good time, doesn’t it? Since my parents live a little over 5 hrs from us, we’ve gotten quite adjusted to the trip. And surprisingly, it isn’t that bad. We’ve had our bad trips (like the time my son got the stomach flu the morning we were heading back home and puked every 30 min the entire way home), but overall we’ve found the key to happiness is letting the kids entertain themselves.

In Home Date Nights

With three children under 4, it isn’t always easy to get out for a date night. Sometimes we do date nights at home. We feed the kids a simple dinner… chicken nuggets or hot dogs. While I am getting the kids ready for bed, my husband grills us steak for dinner. We light a candle and enjoy a leisurely dinner together. We get to talk, uninterrupted and enjoy our food while it is still warm.

Everybody Dance Now

The other day I discovered a way to occupy my kids for a good 15-20 min, which many of you know is an eternity in Mommy time. Wanna know the secret? I let them play with my clock radio. I plugged it in and placed it on the floor in the living room. They had a blast taking turns turning it off and on and changing radio stations. It was more fun then Mommy turning on the stereo, because they had control of turning it on and off as well the fun of switching the music from station to station.

Leaving on a Jet Plane (don't forget to pack extra clothes)

Last fall my husband and I took our three kids on a plane ride to CA to visit my husband’s grandparents and to take in some National Parks. The trip itself is worthy of a post, someday, but for now I’ll just share about our flight out there…. It seems obvious that when flying with three kids under 3 you bring a lot of stuff. We knew we would have to change flights half way so we tried to keep things to a minimum.

Behold the Power of Oxiclean

I have been singing the praises of oxiclean for some time now. It has gotten poop, tomato sauce, mud, and spit up out of my clothes for years. This Easter I REALLY put it to the test. We were dying eggs with the kids. My two year old had just plopped her egg into the red dye when she tipped the mug to peer into it and check out her handiwork.

Hurray for the Pack-n-Play!!

If you read my blog post from Sunday you know that getting my laundry washed, dryed, folded, and put away is a big challenge for me. Today I found a way to help speed along that process. Even though my kids have an entire toy room which they can play in, they begged me to let them play in the pack-n-play while I folded laundry. Yes, that is correct, I actually said to my two and four year old, “If you fight or hit each other in there, you will have to come OUT of the pack-n-play.
